Time Limit for Actives - 2005/01/05 15:35 On the topic of alumni being graduate or otherwise (dropout, military, whatever), our chapter has an unwritten guideline. Those that graduated as a Teke went throught the alumni ritual and everyone knows about it. Those that dropped out, whatever, did not go through the ritual; everyone knows that they did not graduate. Regardless, both groups of alumni (graduate v. left school) are very active with the chapter and still help out whenever needed. TKE is for life, whether or not you finish school or go through a particular ritual.

Just my two cents.

Frater:

Of course, you are right on target -- with the possible exception of that "initiation" ritual, which is kind of important. <G>

I hope things are going well for Sigma-Zeta -- and we hope to see you guys in Atlanta for the Founders Day Celebration on January 15!

YITB,

Time Limit for Actives - 2005/01/27 09:29 TKE is for life. I've said that before and I'll say it again; once you're initiated into the bond you're a Teke for life, regardless of whether or not you graduate. Of course we should all strive to do well academically but that holds no consequence over one's status as a Frater in the Bond.

Non Participation and twisting the Standards - 2005/01/30 16:17 Fraters:

Keep in mind we are not other fraternities and you need to consider that their policies may not be in our best interest. Such as the limited membership. Are you seeking this for ones personal use or does it make sense in the big picture?

TKE has a policy that we are "Fraternity for Life". We are involved and contributing fraters (meet the standards) as active members until we graduate. That means as you become an older member or you have moved into a 'senior" role, you need to know what that truly means. Mentors hip, setting an example, and displaying leadership through your actions. Feeling someone owes you the option to become active is not a refection of such.

If not from a perspective of Leadership, then look at it from our Fraternity Requirements. This decision is not an option for a chapter and you will probably find your financial and insurance a mess. I local chapter cannot decide to just forgo the "BlackBook".

TKE BlackBook
Article VI .. Page 11 Membership. Read this over..it defines the definitions of Active and Inactive, and what Alumni Status is..
Chapter XV - Candidates.. Page 31
Sec 6 Privileges of Membership
Article XII Emblems and Insignia.. Page 15
Sec 2. Badge
Sec 7. Ownership of Membership Badge and Certificate.

Be careful what directions you take. Focus on how to improve your chapter. If seniors are feeling they don't' want to participate in some of the events. Ask yourself. Are we providing interaction, brotherhood and program interests to all members? Do seniors want to only go to parties. What are they dealing with and how can the Chapter take those needs and put it into their programs, activities, and time.

Unwritten guidelines will eventually cause problems in your chapter. You are creating a 'culture" that will come back to bite you later. Ask Gamma Kappa (Indiana University) . They tried to use the 'senior" out unwritten rules. Then the juniors wanted it and then the chapter imploded with the exit of the sophomores. You can fill a house or expect all your leadership to come from your 1st year or second year membership. You are setting yourself up for failure. Ask any group who has not senior involvement, can't fill their chapter house and "life long" perspectives are being cut with the disconnect of the older active members.

If your an Older member? Did you really learn anything about our values, principles, or true servant leadership if you think your too busy to "lead by example"?

Good luck on your Lack of participation. when I am an new member and I see alumni and Seniors leading the way (ritual, service, participation) I see what I will become. If I don't see it.. guess what I will do?

Time Limit for Actives - 2005/03/20 03:22 I would first like to say that OK278's statement that "TKE is until you graduate..." is wrong. TKE IS FOR LIFE. On the idea of Alumni status, we do it very simply; if you have been an active brother for 8 semesters or you have graduated before that, then you become an Alumni. I don't think that becoming an Alumni is that big of deal; in my opinion we should focus most of, if not all of, our attention of recruiting new members in greater numbers than we have in the last few years. If we get a low amount of new members than those Alumni will have nothing to be Alumni to. Just my opinion.
