Time Limit for Actives - 2004/12/29 11:44 My chapter has a problem with people transferring out to larger schools. We are a D2 school and they transfer out to OU or OSU.

My question is what status does that person hold if they transfer out? Inactive? Are they inactive forever? What about those guys that just drop out of school for whatever reason? Inactive?

It's a tough call, I personally feel you should earn a better label if you graduate college than if you don't. Maybe that would be a solution if you are a graduate you could be like a "Graduate Alumni" or some other fitting title.

Just thought I would throw my 2 cents into this one.

Time Limit for Actives - 2004/12/29 12:01 Tricky situation... Is there a chapter at OSU?

Technically, if there is... it i up to them and who affiliates with there chapter.

Time Limit for Actives - 2004/12/29 12:53 Yea, I realize that rule.

OSU - No Chapter

OU - Dying colony

I would rather see the membership status defined a little better and maybe not leave as much room for interpretation.

Alumni - 2004/12/29 12:58 Fraters:

If a member transfers from your institution, then they are an alum, and are are listed as such with the International Headquarters (assuming you properly update your annual membership roster). If they elect to affiliate with another chapter at another institution (and that chapter elects to allow them to affiliate), then their status would be updated by the International Fraternity to indicate that they are, once again, an undergraduate member at the new chapter. They would, however, still be considered an alum of your chapter, since they are no longer enrolled at your institution, and our home chapter is, well, always our home chapter.

Now, having said that, there may be many other "categories" you may use on the local level to determine the status of any one individual. For example, if you are maintaining a database of alumni and coding them to indicate their status, you might use the above example to code someone as a "non-graduate alum;" indicating that they are no longer enrolled at your institution. You might have another for transfers, drop-outs, etc. However, that does not change the fact that if they are not enrolled or transfer, their status changes to alumnus, according to the Black Book, and should be considered as such by your collegiate chapter.

Time Limit for Actives - 2004/12/29 13:07 [quote="HeffTKE"]Fraters, I may be the only person who disagrees with this topic. I personally go to a school where I watch other fraternities and sororities that have the ability to grant alumni status after a certain time period. It may have worked in the beginning, however, it begins to become a way out or an excuse. There are many members of the greek system that "when the get upset with someone" or "don't really want to go to rush events" or "anything they can think of, basically just use their ability to become an alumni member as a cop out. Since it is almost impossible to graduate in 4 years anymore, before you know it, half the chapter could be alumni, that is the half of the chapter which has been around the longest and has the most knowledge to share with its members. YITB

Frater:

I understand what you are staying here, however, I believe there is a difference between a situation where members are allowed to, at will, change their own status within the chapter, and a situation which requires that the member meet certain requirements before alumni status is granted. In my prior post, I indicated that I believe this should be done only under special circumstances, only if the member has completed eight semesters (not including summer terms), has a zero balance, AND meets with the approval of both the chapter and the Board of Advisors. I think such a process would prevent the situation you have suggested from occuring.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should a chapter EVER allow members to change their membership status at will. That is disaster waiting to happen.

Time Limit for Actives - 2004/12/29 13:41 YES, YES, YES My point exaclty... thanks for saying it better than I could...

I believe in the term limit for an active, but he HAS to not be an arrears with the chapter! As a chapter, specify in your bylaws what that member should have to qualify to become an ALumnus at a certain point. This is good because it continues to give actives a goal to shoot towards.

Pleadges already have a goal, and many actives without a goal (I understand that graduation should be a goal, and it is... I am talking about within the confines of the chapter) tend to not work... While graudation is teh ultimate goal, it can beachieved without TKE techically and many actives just quit at that point and focus on their studies...

I like them going Alumn... No more insurance payments on that guy, OGC dues... etc. Especially when he does not come around much anymore...
