Comments on Proposed Amendments - 2005/03/22 23:01 Amendment 1: Allows for periodic adjustment of subscription fees for THE TEKE magazine to be reflective of actual costs for production of the magazine.

This is a simple amendment that makes sense. Since The Teke is not supported by advertising, subscription rates should reflect the actual cost of production.

---------------------------

Amendment 2: Provides for delivery of The Teke to each collegiate member "during his time as a collegiate member and for one year following his collegiate membership" replacing "for seven years from the date he becomes a collegiate member."

Taking the 21st Century action of publishing The Teke in HTML format on tke.org would render this amendment moot.

---------------------------

Amendment 3: Requires each chapter to publish at least one newsletter to its alumni each academic year.

I just can't get at all excited about this proposal. We're in the electronic age now and need to break away from the quill pen era of annual newsletters. Each chapter should communicate with it's alumni via the web or e-mail and keep them updated on a real time basis.

---------------------------

Amendment 4: Changes the time required to initiate a candidate from six weeks after bid acceptance to eight weeks.

This would be a step backward. The sooner we get candidates initiated and fully involved as full participating members of the chapter, the stronger we will be.

---------------------------

Amendment 5: Instructs the Grand Council to develop a policy to ensure that debts owed to the Fraternity are paid in a timely manner and also expressly authorizes the expulsion of members, or removal of a group’s recognition, if they fail to make timely payment on debts owed to the Fraternity.

Vote yes on this one. Non-payment of debts to the fraternity increases the financial burden on each collegiate member and chapter that does pay on time and should not be tolerated.

---------------------------

Amendment 6: Requires the chapter Prytanis and Crysophylos to take action against an individual member who is 60 or more days delinquent in his debts to TKE at various levels. If the officer fails to fulfill his responsibilities, the CEO is authorized to remove the officer. Chapters and colonies are likewise expected to meet their financial obligations to the Fraternity, and if such debts are unresolved in a timely manner, then that chapter or colony is automatically placed on charter probation until the matter is resolved.

Another yes vote. Some may think this is harsh, but non-paying members increase the costs for everyone else. This amendment gives the Prytanis and Crysophylos some real clout in exercising their responsibilities.
---------------------------

Amendment 7: Requires each candidate and member to meet his financial obligations to the Fraternity, clarifying fraternal and civil penalties for not meeting such obligations.

Because this amendment authorizes the "imposition of late charges in addition to the amount of the original obligation" and does not provide ony cap on those late charges, I'd be inclined to vote against it.

---------------------------

Amendment 8: Changes the composition and format of the nominations committee to be a standing committee of the Fraternity to be composed of seven members, no less then four of whom shall be collegiate members.

I oppose this amendment because it carries the restriction that all of the collegiate members must serve on or have served on the Collegiate Advisory Committee.

---------------------------

Amendment 9: Replaces an elected Grand Histor with one appointed by the Grand Prytanis.

The Grand Council serves as the board of directors of the fraternity. Why would we choose to make one of the directors an appointed rather than elected position? I'm far from a conspiracy theorist, but this sure sounds like it may be enabling legislation to place a certain person, who has already been selected, on the Grand Council.

---------------------------

Amendment 10: Designates the office of Grand Epiprytanis to also serve as the Grand Prytanis-Elect.

Some fraternal and service organizations have this kind of built in succession, but I've never been in favor of it. In the reasons for this proposed change, it is pointed out that "Since 1963, every Grand Epiprytanis who has stood for election as Grand Prytanis has been elected to that position." So, why do we need this amendment. Seems as if we already have things right. Let's not fix what ain't broke.

---------------------------

Amendment 11: Establishes set dates for the submission of legislation to be considered by the Grand Chapter at Conclave.

This is a good amendment. It makes the time table for proposing conclave legislation easier to understand.

Re: Comments on Proposed Amendments - 2005/05/02 17:42 [quote="himareme"]Amendment 1: Allows for periodic adjustment of subscription fees for THE TEKE magazine to be reflective of actual costs for production of the magazine.

This is a simple amendment that makes sense. Since The Teke is not supported by advertising, subscription rates should reflect the actual cost of production.

tank-THE TEKE should be published in PDF format, with HTML format as secondary. It should be easy to print, too. Actually, by doing this electronically, it can save bundles on mailing costs. However, one would need an email address posted with OGC in order to received the announcement of publication.

---------------------------

Amendment 2: Provides for delivery of The Teke to each collegiate member "during his time as a collegiate member and for one year following his collegiate membership" replacing "for seven years from the date he becomes a collegiate member."

Taking the 21st Century action of publishing The Teke in HTML format on tke.org would render this amendment moot.

tank-PDF format is better than HTML, but see the argument above, please.
---------------------------

Amendment 3: Requires each chapter to publish at least one newsletter to its alumni each academic year.

I just can't get at all excited about this proposal. We're in the electronic age now and need to break away from the quill pen era of annual newsletters. Each chapter should communicate with it's alumni via the web or e-mail and keep them updated on a real time basis.

tank-Here is where the Chapter Alumni Association should come into play. It is beyond reason to expect the Histor to be able to do it all without help. An Alumni who is experienced in Public Relations, Journalism, Technical Writing, report writing, or any other related field should be mentoring the Histor. Frater Umberger has an outstanding program for this, give him a shout and I bet he would give you the full rundown. And, too, keep in mind, this forum is a great place to post the announcement of your newsletter's publication, too. We alumni who have the experience would be quite willing to help if asked. It might take a while for us to answer, depending on our schedule, but most will answer.

---------------------------

Amendment 4: Changes the time required to initiate a candidate from six weeks after bid acceptance to eight weeks.

This would be a step backward. The sooner we get candidates initiated and fully involved as full participating members of the chapter, the stronger we will be.

tank-I will not comment on this other than to say that initiation is a Chapter thing, with the Candidate trainer knowing more than anyone who is ready for initiation, and the vote of the entire chapter being required. But I am from the old school.

Non-payment of debts to the fraternity increases the financial burden on each collegiate member and chapter that does pay on time and should not be tolerated.

tank-This has been a problem for over 100 years.

This amendment gives the Prytanis and Crysophylos some real clout in exercising their responsibilities.

tank-Again, a continuing problem
---------------------------

Amendment 7: Requires each candidate and member to meet his financial obligations to the Fraternity, clarifying fraternal and civil penalties for not meeting such obligations.

Because this amendment authorizes the "imposition of late charges in addition to the amount of the original obligation" and does not provide any cap on those late charges, I'd be inclined to vote against it.

tank-Agree unless the cap is inserted.

---------------------------

Amendment 8: Changes the composition and format of the nominations committee to be a standing committee of the Fraternity to be composed of seven members, no less then four of whom shall be collegiate members.

I oppose this amendment because it carries the restriction that all of the collegiate members must serve on or have served on the Collegiate Advisory Committee.

tank-No comment

---------------------------

Amendment 9: Replaces an elected Grand Histor with one appointed by the Grand Prytanis.

The Grand Council serves as the board of directors of the fraternity. Why would we choose to make one of the directors an appointed rather than elected position? I'm far from a conspiracy theorist, but this sure sounds like it may be enabling legislation to place a certain person, who has already been selected, on the Grand Council.

tank-Could be, but for this position, maybe it is not a bad idea.

---------------------------

Amendment 10: Designates the office of Grand Epiprytanis to also serve as the Grand Prytanis-Elect.

Some fraternal and service organizations have this kind of built in succession, but I've never been in favor of it. In the reasons for this proposed change, it is pointed out that "Since 1963, every Grand Epiprytanis who has stood for election as Grand Prytanis has been elected to that position." tank-continuity

---------------------------

Amendment 11: Establishes set dates for the submission of legislation to be considered by the Grand Chapter at Conclave.

This is a good amendment. It makes the time table for proposing conclave legislation easier to understand.

tank-I thought we already had this.
